František Volf was born in 1897 in Třeboň, Czech republic. He came to Slovakia in the 1919 and stayed in Veľká Bytča where he was acting as teacher and translator, with agreement of Alois Jirasek he translated his drama "Otec" - "Father". František Volf left Bytča in 1922 and came to Dohňany, where he stayed till 1929 as teacher at state school. according to his own words it was the most prolific period. He divided his time for teaching, translating and collecting draft of Czech and Slovak writer. In cooperation with Josef Pospíšil they published youth geographical journal "Slovenskou otčinou" (1925-1928), in the 1925 Štefan Krčméry entrusted him with publishing children periodical - Včielka", and in the 1928 on his own costs publish "Československé ráno". Very important for Volf was friendship and cooperation with Jan Hála, who illustrated his book, magazines and textbooks.

After leaving Dohňany in 1929 F. Volf continued to travelling across the Slovakia till 1938 when he returned to his native country. He left important culture heritage in our country for many generation.
On the journey through the Slovakia he met not only beauty, but also poverty, which reflected in the portraits and gestures of the poorest. His painting was influenced by cubizm, which can be seen on oil painting "Začiatok a koniec", social realizm in "Jedlíci z ústavu", and also naturalizm, illuzionizm. Artist found his own style in the 50's, it is represented by simple lines in his lyrical landscape and portraits.

František Volf returned to Dohňany in 1972 to took over honour title citizenship of municipality Dohňany, as gratefulness for culture development and acting in municipality.
He died in 1983 in České Budejovice.

 

f tajovskyAfter Jozef Gragor Tajovský graduated Institution for teacher in Zniev he was removed as 21 year old teacher to Dohňany, because of his untihungarian thoughts and for contradiction with school authority. He stayed in Dohňany from 1895 till 1897. Here J. G. Tajovský met dramatist Ferko Urbánek, under his influence he turned his view to writing folk drama. Such style of writing he used in plays Anička, Sľuby, Konačka, Námluvy. Ženský zákon is said to be his best play from the series of folk drama. Konačka and Námluvy was written in Dohňany, in this plays he emphasize typical Slovak village with money and property relations.
J. G. Tajovský is considered to be one of the most important representative of Slovak literature and is one of the founder of realizm, describing national and social view of living.
